Have you ever noticed someone who is standing in line or across the room that makes you stop and say, “Great look.”? Do you stop and consider what made you say that?
First it may be a color or a particular style that caught your eye, but in many cases the way the garments fit may be the reason the look is so outstanding.
Having a great fitting wardrobe means that your outfits will look like
they were custom-made for you. With proper tailoring a silhouette
can be created that is the most flattering for YOU.
As always, Doncaster’s 2011 Spring Collections have an
outstanding selection of jackets and pants. We are so fortunate to
have such an abundance of colors, fabrics and silhouette choices.
There is truly something for everyone’s lifestyle and body type. With
so much opportunity, there comes the challenge of finding that
“perfect fit” – the fit of your body type with the perfect garment style.
The following extremely helpful Fit Tips are from Doncaster VP Ellyn Cooley and Tina Chellis, Director of Doncaster Product Development.
FIT TIPS
JACKETS
Select the style that best fits the shape you want to achieve.
Example – For a longer, slimmer silhouettes look for v-necks, pressed pleats, princess seams, and front closures.
- To broaden shoulders look for horizontal details such as yokes.
- To accentuated areas you feel good about, look for details such
as seams and draping that highlight that these areas.
- Most sizing is determined by one or more of the following areas
of the body: the bust, waist, hips and occasionally the shoulders.
Be sure to fit the widest point (such as bust) and alter other
areas as needed.
- Tapering a sleeve, a small alteration, that provided big results.
It gives waist definition with out altering the body of the garment.
- When fitting a longer jacket, if you are petite, there should be
nothing longer than when your hands are at your sides and you
curl your fingers toward your palm. The end of the jacket length
should be right in the crook of your fingers.
PANTS
Most pant sizing is determined by one or more of the following areas of the body: The waist, hips, and occasionally the thigh.
- Take the widest point of the body and choose the size that best
fits this area. Once the correct size is found, you need to
determine what area needs to be altered to create the
proper fit.
- If the pants whisker on the thighs, size up and adjust the waist to
fit. A bit of “whiskering” may be fine on jeans but most pants
should be fairly whisker-free; a looser fit is better than a snug fit.
- Commit to a length and then hem pants, jeans or trousers to skim
the surface of the ground when you stand up straight. Anything
shorter is poor style.
- Covering up your shoe, but allowing your toes to peep through,
will elongate your leg and make you look slimmer. This is
flattering for any body type, at any age and any height. That is
why hemming is a critical alteration to keep those pant lengths
perfect.
